Abstract. The present article examines the history of the establishment, development and functional transformation of Batumi Workshop School from 1888 to 1921. The research is based on the primary sources preserved in the Fund I-27 of the Archives Administration of Ajara, which include certificates of personal files of students, minutes of the Pedagogical Council, correspondence and circulars. The paper analyzes the role of the educational institution in the socio-economic life of the region, the evolution of educational profiles, the impact of the First World War on the educational process and the stages of reorganization of the institution in the light of the change of political regimes. Special attention is paid to the presentation of biographical data of the public, medical and educational elite of that period.
